Xiaomi is better known for budget smartphones and surprise electric vehicles than for cutting-edge robotics. But the company's latest progress update on its humanoid robot program — reporting a 98% task success rate on certain operations inside its automotive factory — is a data point the industry should take seriously.

Numbers on the Factory Floor Are Different

Progress claims in robotics are often vague. Companies routinely announce that robots are "deployed," "operating," or "helping" in production facilities without publishing anything resembling measurable outcomes. That makes Xiaomi's 98% figure notable — not because it proves the robot is perfect, but because publishing a specific task success rate at all signals a level of operational maturity most humanoid programs have not yet reached.

A 98% success rate on some tasks is not the same as a production-ready general-purpose robot. The qualifier matters: these are specific, defined operations in a controlled workflow, almost certainly chosen because they represent the clearest wins for the current hardware and software stack. But even a scoped benchmark like this represents real deployment discipline — someone measured the failures, understood the edge cases, and iterated until the error rate dropped to the low single digits.

That iterative process, more than the number itself, is what distinguishes credible factory robotics from demo-reel robotics.

What Xiaomi Has Been Building

Xiaomi's humanoid ambitions began with CyberOne, a full-sized humanoid unveiled at a product event in August 2022. At the time, CyberOne was clearly a concept vehicle — impressively built, but far from industrial deployment. What followed was quieter: years of internal development, integration with Xiaomi's EV manufacturing operations at its Beijing factory, and a steady drip of progress updates.

The company's automotive operations give it a natural proving ground that most pure-play robotics startups lack. Xiaomi's SU7 electric sedan and SU7 Ultra are built in a facility that is, by design, a testbed for the company's integrated technology vision — phones, cars, smart home devices, and increasingly, robots, all woven into a single ecosystem. Running humanoids in that factory is not a PR exercise; it is Xiaomi genuinely eating its own cooking.

China's Factory Humanoid Advantage

Xiaomi is not alone. Chinese manufacturers have moved faster than almost anyone on integrating humanoid robots into real production environments. Agibot has conducted public livestreams of semi-humanoid robots handling electronics components. BYD and other EV makers have explored similar pilots. The broader Chinese government target — 100,000 humanoid units deployed in 2026 — is ambitious to the point of being aspirational, but the factory integration data coming out of Chinese companies suggests the underlying progress is real.

There are structural reasons for this. Chinese manufacturers have enormous internal production scale to test robots against, lower per-unit labor cost pressure (which paradoxically makes it easier to justify robots as productivity enhancers rather than immediate cost cutters), and government incentives that reduce the financial risk of early-stage deployments. The result is a feedback loop: more deployments mean more real-world training data, which means faster capability improvement, which justifies more deployments.

Xiaomi's 98% figure is a data point from inside that loop.

What Still Has to Break Down

Factory robots consistently run into the same category of failures: edge cases in object positioning, variability in component tolerances, and anomalies that fall outside the training distribution. A 98% success rate means roughly 1 in 50 attempts fails. In a high-volume production line, that adds up fast. Closing the last 2% typically requires the kind of exhaustive real-world data collection and model refinement that takes years, not months.

There is also the question of task breadth. Current humanoid factory deployments are strongest at tasks that are repetitive, well-structured, and physically manageable — moving totes, inspecting parts, positioning components. Tasks requiring fine dexterity, real-time adaptation to unpredictable environments, or judgment calls under uncertainty remain significantly harder. The hands problem — getting robots to reliably manipulate small, irregular, or delicate objects — is still one of the hardest open problems in the field.

Several companies are now specifically targeting this gap. 1X Technologies recently unveiled a new humanoid hand designed to match or exceed human grip capability. Tesollo in South Korea is scaling up production of dexterous robotic hands. The competition to solve dexterity is intensifying precisely because the rest of the stack — locomotion, perception, basic manipulation — is reaching usable levels.

Why This Should Be on Your Radar

Xiaomi's update is a reminder that the humanoid factory race is not just between Figure, Agility, Tesla Optimus, and Boston Dynamics. A large, well-funded, vertically integrated Chinese consumer electronics and automotive company with its own manufacturing base is quietly building its way toward humanoid capability — and using its own factories as a live training environment.

The 98% headline will likely get lost in the daily noise of robotics announcements. It shouldn't. Credible factory benchmarks from major manufacturers are how this technology graduates from concept to infrastructure — and Xiaomi just posted one.
